Mayor's Report for May 2nd, 2023
April 18th
I presided over our Regular Council Meeting
April 19th
I was interviewed by McLean’s Magazine to discuss the need for doctors in our municipality. This is the third interview I have done; i) CTV Ottawa, ii) TVO – the Thread, and iii) McLean’s. McLean’s Magazine produced an article which is available on line. The article provides information on the incentive package that Marmora and Lake offers in co-ordination with Hastings County and the Province and promotes the rural lifestyle that can be enjoyed in Marmora. I am pleased to tell you that we have had more than a dozen enquiries and at least six of those enquiries are very serious. They are currently in discussion with our local doctors at the medical centre.
April 20th
I attended the Hastings County Planning & Development Committee and Finance, Property and Personnel Committee Meetings.
April 21st
I attended a special Hastings County Meeting.
April 22nd
I was invited to attend a kick-off breakfast for the Classic Cruisers Car Show. The breakfast was well attended and they expressed their thanks to Council for their support and the authorization to close the street for the weekly show. The first car show is May 4th. The proceeds are being donated to the local schools for their breakfast program and the local food banks.
April 23rd
I attended the documentary produced by Brock Kerby and Mr. Long regarding our local residents Jim and Bud (Lloyd) Loveless and their missions in World War II, particularly Bud who was a pilot and flew in the platoon, with the spitfires. The show was amazingly well done and showed a lot of footage of the war in many of the European Countries. A portion of the show included the early life of Bud and Rita and many of those clips were filmed in Deloro and Marmora. On his return from the war, Bud owned and operated the Loveless grocery store where Theo’s Pizzeria is now located.
Tim Black relayed a lot of the history shared by Bud. The event was held at the Legion and it was a packed house. It was an amazing tribute to the Loveless family, their extended families and friends.
April 24th
I attended a meeting with the Doctor Recruitment Committee. Even though we are getting a lot of attention to the program, we are continuing to promote the need for doctors.
April 25th
I attended two Hastings County Meetings. The special “closed” meeting was scheduled to interview the final two applicants and make a final recommendation and decision on the position of CAO.
April 26th
I attended the Hastings Prince Edward Board of Health Finance Committee Meeting.
I was invited to participate in a contest with mayors of the surrounding communities to purchase a ticket for the Catch the Ace competition in support of the Campbellford Memorial Hospital fundraising efforts. I purchased the ticket at Possibilities with Marlene Braun.
April 29th
I volunteered at the annual Tree Giveaway event. This event was planned by Deputy Mayor Stevens. Councillor Daoust picked up the trees and delivered tables and chairs. Councillor Lakatos organized the various tree types and volunteers filled the requests. Although the weather was very rainy and wet, all trees were collected by noon. Residents were extremely appreciative of the opportunity to get the trees, especially those that lost a lot of trees in last summer’s storms. Thank you to all volunteers who helped with the event and thank you to staff who assisted the volunteers.
I attended the Pancake Breakfast put on by the Marmora Pentecostal Church. I believe they had a huge turnout and the food was really good. I understand that the proceeds are going to the local schools.
The Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camila is scheduled for Saturday. I received a letter requesting that all locations within the commonwealth countries recognize the coronation by displaying or lighting public buildings and properties in purple. I didn’t get the information in time for it to be in the Agenda. Staff are considering what can be done on very short notice.
Another information item: The Fire Department is holding a pancake breakfast on Saturday at the Fire Hall. I encourage everyone to come out and support our fire department and maybe have a look at our new pumper truck.
