The Marmora and Lake Emergency Management Control Group met this morning to discuss the damage and response to the significant weather event that hit our area yesterday afternoon. Most areas of Marmora and Lake, Havelock, and Norwood are still without power. Centre Hastings power has been restored.
The Manager of Transportation has declared a Significant Weather Event as per Regulation 239/02 of the Municipal Act which means there may be significant danger to users of the highways in the municipality. Please drive with caution, and only make trips that are necessary to ensure the roads are clear for emergency services.
Damage is extensive throughout the municipality and some roads have been completely blocked by downed trees. Crews are working tirelessly to clear enough space for emergency vehicles – please do not drive on roads when it is not necessary, you might cause delays for emergency crews.
The Fire Department was out all night responding to calls, and the Fire Chief asks the public to please reserve the phone lines for emergencies only. Please do not call to report trees down on your property or on the roads unless they are blocking the way to a medical emergency.
The municipality does not know when power will be restored, and we want to caution everyone to stay away from downed wires and to assume lines are live at all times. Do not cut trees that are hung up on any wire.
Finally, please prepare for an extended period of time with no power and conserve energy to be safe if you are running a generator. As of Sunday, May 22, 2022, in the morning, the Madoc and Bancroft gas stations were with power if you need gas. Pioneer in Marmora is open, but lineups are very long.
Please be safe and we will try to keep you up to date as things evolve.
