Quinte Waste Solutions: Film Plastic Recycling

-FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-

Film Plastic Recycling

Start date: May 10, 2022

End date: June 30, 2022

Quinte Waste Solutions is experiencing unmanageable amounts of contamination in their film plastics collection. This is mostly due to unacceptable materials that resemble film plastics ending up in blue boxes.

Quinte Waste Solutions is one of the few remaining municipal recycling programs that still accept film plastics. In June 2019, many municipal programs cut out the collection of film plastics. In order to keep them in the program, residents will need to recycle film plastics properly. This includes learning what is and isn’t acceptable for curbside collection.

“Residents are at risk of losing film plastics as part of their curbside recycling program. This is mostly due to new types of packaging that resemble film ending up in bags of film plastic. The materials we accept must be free of contamination so they can be sold. When we receive too much contamination, we can’t sell the material, and it ends up as garbage. To address this issue we are running a focused communications initiative with photos, infographics and information in as many outlets as possible. We are also asking that residents review the available information on what is acceptable film plastic and to be aware of packaging that looks similar but is not acceptable. We want to keep this material in the program, but can’t do so without everyone's help”, says Dan Miller, Transition & Operations Manager, at Quinte Waste Solutions.

Quinte Waste Solutions is requesting that residents go online to quinterecycling.org and review the film plastics information. Residents can also expect to see an insert in their local newspaper coming soon. This will give helpful guidance on what can and can’t be included in the film plastics stream of recycling.
