2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)
A new virus, COVID-19 (formerly referred to as 2019-nCoV) not previously seen in humans, has been reported as the cause of several pneumonia cases originating in Wuhan, China. COVID-19 is a unique strain of a common virus that is responsible for many colds and respiratory infections. Symptoms of this illness have ranged from mild cold-like symptoms to severe illness with fever, cough, difficulty breathing and pneumonia.
Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) is working closely with Public Health Ontario and the Ministry of Health to monitor the situation. We are working proactively to prepare for any potential cases in our area, and protect our community.
Travel
The World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 to be a global pandemic. Simply put, this means a disease that has spread across an entire country or the world, usually affecting a number of people. Public Health’s list of global areas affected by COVID-19, and recommendations for travel, will be regularly updated.
