Two properties in municipality approved for secondary dwellings
Marmora and Lake - The secondary dwelling By-law passed in November 2018, is already proving to be a success in the municipality.
Chief Building Official Matt deJong says there have already been permits issued for the construction of a secondary dwelling on two properties in the municipality.
Both projects - one in the urban area and one in the rural - are 1,000 square foot garages with living space on the second floor.
With limited building lots available for sale in the urban area, the By-law paves the way for additional housing to be built on lots that already have a residential unit on them. This could be in the form of a basement apartment, attached or detached unit, providing it meets all the criteria set out in the By-law.
“This shows that the secondary dwelling By-law is creating affordable housing in both the urban and rural areas for the residents of Marmora and Lake,” deJong said. “Under the right circumstances it’s really feasible to add a secondary dwelling to your property and generate additional income.”
