August 4, 2020: Mayor's Report

July 8th

Participated in a briefing by Jim Pine, CAO, Hastings County.

The good news is there have been 0 outbreaks and no active cases in the Long Term Care facilities in Hastings County.

The paramedics in conjunction with the Board of Health and Quinte Health Care are ramping up their services in preparation for a possible second wave of COVID and the flu season in the fall and the return of students to the classroom.

Attended a teleconference call with Premier Ford and Minister Steve Clark, Municipal Affairs and Housing

The main topic was transitioning from Phase II to Phase III and then into full recovery.

They discussed the province’s commitment to funding for infrastructure and support for economic development.

July 12th

I visited the Mags Landing boat launch and park to observe the activity within the parking lot. The parking lot was not full but there were trucks with trailers parked on the south side of the barriers at the driveway. I witnessed one individual who just backed over the barriers. I ask him if he realized it was no parking area. He willingly agreed to move his truck and trailer and parked in the available space in the lot.

July 21st

I chaired the special meeting of Council regarding Mag’s Landing.

July 22nd

I participated in a briefing by Jim Pine, CAO, Hastings County. Mr. Pine introduced the County’s plan for Phase III and the reopening of the Hastings County offices and policies being put into place to ensure the safety of staff and the public. There will be strict screening protocols for staff and the public entering the facility. It will be mandatory to wear masks while in public areas.

July 24th

I participated in a special meeting of ROMA.

We will continue to meet virtually probably for the rest of the year.

ROMA conference scheduled to be held in early 2021 may be attended personally however it may be necessary to wear masks.

Alan Thompson, Chair, was preparing for a 7-minute presentation to the Minister to present ROMA’s case for funding for the rural sector and that funding be fairly distributed.

Funding is to be committed to operations, not infrastructure.

It is assumed that Insurance costs due to COVID will increase.

July 27th

I recorded a brief speech to request support to be elected to the ROMA Board of Directors representing the Rural Caucus for the next term. The AMO Conference is being held virtually and AMO and ROMA Board Meetings will be held virtually.

July 28th

I met with Tonia to discuss various issues in preparation for the Council meeting.

July 30th

Deputy Mayor Stevens, Tonia, CAO, Matt, By-law had a conference call to discuss by-law enforcement issues particularly the Noise By-law and Short-term Rentals.
