Marmora Arena Update

Marmora, ON — November 29th, 2024 — At the Regular Meeting of Council on November 19th, 2024, the Manager of Parks & Recreation/Facilities provided a report which shared that insurance will cover the cost of the replacement of the failed chiller at the Dr. Hamilton Crawford Memorial Arena. This will spare a significant impact on the ratepayers of Marmora and Lake related to this replacement. Unfortunately, because this news comes so late in the season, and the work still needs to be completed, Council made the very difficult decision not to install ice for the remainder of the 2024/2025 season. Council was made aware of other critical repairs that require urgent attention in order to bring the arena up to code. Likewise, the cost of installing and maintaining the ice would fall on the taxpayers, with only three months available for potential revenue. Council and staff alike are disappointed that hockey and skating will not be available for the community this season, but believe this is the most responsible decision that could be made under the circumstances. We thank you for your continued understanding and support. Updates will be provided in the coming weeks regarding other opportunities at the arena as they become available.
