2024 day of action on litter

Day of Action on Litter is a province-wide initiative that encourages communities to work together to pick up trash and recycling and properly dispose of it at the municipal landfill and recycling station.

Our community belongs to all of us. Participating in Day of Action on Litter, on May 5, 2024, will help keep our neighbourhoods, public parks, waterways and roadways clean and safe for everyone.

FAQs

When is the event?
You can participate in Day of Action on Litter all day long on Sunday, May 5, 2024.

How do I know where to clean?
You can fill out our online sign-up form (below), and let us know which street, roadway or public area you intend to clean.

Do I have to have a group of people?
Gather a group of friends or go solo – it’s totally up to you. Pick up as much or as little as you can. Every little bit counts.

Where do I get my Clean-Up Kit?
Marmora and Lake is providing a “Clean-Up Kit” for people who are signed up to participate.

You can pick it up at the following locations:

  • April 22 to May 3: Town Hall, the Tourism Centre or the Library (during business hours)

  • May 4: The Marmora Fairgrounds during the Free Tree Giveaway (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

What does the Clean-Up Kit include?
This kit includes two (2) pairs of gloves, two (2) garbage bags, and an information sheet that tells you important safety information and gives you a list of central locations where you can drop-off your garbage or arrange pick-up.

You can pick up more than one kit if you have a large group.

Where do I take my garbage?
Your Clean-Up Kit will include a list of centralized locations where you can drop-off your bags. The Municipality will pick up all bags on Monday, May 6, 2024, to go to the landfill and be properly disposed of. If you are unable to transport your bags to a drop-off location, pick-up arrangements can be made.

How do I know what’s safe to pick up?
The information sheet in our Clean-Up Kit will include a list of items you should not pick up. The Province also has an online guide with tips for safety: https://files.ontario.ca/mecp_2/mecp-public-cleanup-guide-en-2023-04-26.pdf

If you come across something big or heavy (such as furniture) or something too dangerous to pick up (such as needles, condoms, flammable liquids, etc.), take note of the location. Do not pick these items up. Please report their location and the municipality will arrange to pick them up.

Want to participate?

Follow these 4 easy steps:

Step 1: Register below and choose an area where you would like to pick up litter. Registering helps identify the areas that have been cleaned and how many people are participating in the event

Step 2: Pick up your Clean-Up Kit (bags and gloves) and information sheet.

Step 3: Pick up litter from roadsides, green and common spaces, sidewalks, and trails on May 5th, rain or shine.

Step 4: See information sheet included with your Clean-Up Kit for collected garbage drop-off and pick-up options.

Thank you for taking the time to register! The information you provide helps us know how many supplies are needed and which locations will be cleaned. We use this info to direct community members to areas still in need of some TLC.
